Cityscape Photography · Civil Twilight

One hour.
Every city.

I photograph cities in the blue hour of civil twilight — the brief window when the sky turns deep blue and the city lights turn gold. It is the only photography I do.

Every frame follows the same discipline: one iconic landmark to anchor the city, one moment of light, one palette of deep blue and warm gold.

The consistency is the point. Whether it is Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Chengdu, you will recognise the hour before you recognise the skyline.

About

The blue hour is my studio.

My name is Henry Lam. I am a cityscape photographer, and I work within one narrow window of the day: civil twilight, when the sun sits just below the horizon and the sky holds its deepest blue.

In that window, something rare happens. The cool of the sky and the warmth of the city lights sit in perfect balance — deep cobalt above, glowing gold below. It lasts minutes. Then it is gone until tomorrow.

Every image in this collection includes an iconic landmark, so the city is unmistakable at a glance. The hour, the colours and the composition stay constant from city to city. My favourite subjects are the cities of China and Asia, where the scale of the skylines makes that crossover moment extraordinary.

All photographs are captured and processed by me, from planning the vantage point to the final edit.
